About indie ink
In a world in which barriers continue to crumble – barriers between creators and distributors, between artists and audiences, even barriers between the artists themselves – how do you describe a company that wants to pick up the pieces of the old economy and make something new from the shiny bits scattered among the wreckage?
You could call us a publishing company, but that implies things that aren't true about us, and it completely fails to capture some of the exciting things we are about. Words like “collaborative” or “collective” don't quite capture it either, but they do pick up some of the nuances that “publisher” misses.
Whatever we are, we're about artists taking back control of our creative processes. Not just the initial creation of our art, but the entire process: creation, production, promotion and, most importantly, interaction – with our audiences and with each other.
The new world of media and communications technologies allow solitary artists to reach out like never before, limited only by our time, our skills and our imaginations. The trick, we think, is for artists and audiences to band together, to share their skills and passions, and to create a vibrant community amongst ourselves, working together to share the fruits of our common creations – but we have to move quickly, before the middle-men of old figure out how to drive themselves back in between us.
So, what word would you use to describe a company like that? Since none of the old ones seem to fit, we've come up with our own. We like to think of indie ink as a “creativity catalyst.” In fact, we like that term so much that we use it to define our top level job titles.
